Fishing, Math, and Sustainability: Riptide Bait & Tackle Inspires Brigantine’s 4th Graders
Brigantine, New Jersey, is home to incredible natural resources and a tight-knit community that values education and sustainability. This week, Riptide Bait & Tackle teamed up with a 4th-grade class for a hands-on learning experience that brought math, science, and the importance of sustainable fishing to life.
Math Meets Fishing at Riptide Bait & Tackle
Fourth-grade teacher Miss Mooch introduced her students to the practical side of multiplication using bait prices from Riptide Bait & Tackle. By turning real-life bait prices into multiplication problems, students practiced a key math skill while connecting it to a real-world scenario.
“We worked on multiplication because it’s an essential fourth-grade skill,” said Miss Mooch. “I wanted to make it fun and show how math is part of everyday life, even in fishing.”
The students also learned about the life cycle of striped bass, focusing on the fall and spring seasons—known as the "Fall Run" and "Spring Run." These seasons are prime times for fishing, and understanding the life cycle helped students see how ecosystems are interconnected.
Sustainable Fishing: Lessons for the Future
Miss Mooch didn’t stop with math. The class explored sustainable fishing practices and New Jersey’s fishing regulations. Students learned why fish size limits are critical to protecting marine ecosystems. They discussed how catching fish that are too small or too large can disrupt the ocean’s delicate balance.
Riptide Bait & Tackle owner Captain Andy welcomed the students and shared his passion for fishing and sustainability. “Kids are the future of the fishing industry,” said Captain Andy. “It’s exciting to see them learning and getting inspired.”
A Hands-On Experience in Brigantine
At Riptide Bait & Tackle, students got to meet Captain Andy and see the bait shop in action. The visit tied their classroom lessons to the real world, offering a chance to explore Brigantine’s unique fishing culture.
The kids solved math problems, learned about bait prices, and got a glimpse of what it’s like to run a bait and tackle shop. Captain Andy also prepared a few fun treats for the students, including gummy worms, Swedish Fish, and stickers, making the day memorable.
Why Brigantine is the Perfect Place for Outdoor Learning
Brigantine’s coastal environment, with its bay and ocean access, offers countless opportunities for outdoor education. This collaboration between Riptide Bait & Tackle and the 4th-grade class highlights the importance of engaging with local resources.
From learning about marine biology to practicing math in a real-world setting, the students experienced how their community can be both a classroom and a playground.
