What It Takes to Keep Our Community Safe - Inside Brigantine Firefighter Training
Firefighters train year-round to be ready for anything, but have you ever wondered what that training actually looks like? In our latest Brigantine Living episode, we sat down with Chief Fuller after experiencing a live burn training firsthand.
What Is Live Burn Training?
Live burn training is a controlled fire exercise designed to prepare firefighters for real emergencies. Brigantine’s firefighters and EMS teams head to the Canale Fire Training Academy in Egg Harbor Township at least once a year for this critical training.
These drills allow firefighters to practice:
-Entering smoke-filled buildings safely
-Managing fire suppression techniques
-Handling high-rise fire rescues
-Using specialized fire equipment
During our visit, we saw the team in action - climbing ladders, hauling heavy hoses, and working inside a burning building. The intensity of the smoke alone was overwhelming, and even after leaving, the smell of fire stuck with Kelly for days!
How Firefighters Prepare for High-Rise Fires
While Brigantine doesn’t have skyscrapers, it does have mid-rise buildings like La Sammana, Brigantine Beach Club, and the beachfront hotel. These structures require different firefighting tactics because traditional hose lines from a fire truck can’t always reach the upper floors.
To prepare, Brigantine’s firefighters train inside the drill tower at Canale Fire Academy, simulating real-world scenarios like:
-Scaling high-rise buildings
-Using standpipes inside stairwells to access water
-Practicing rescues in confined spaces
Every Friday, the team also conducts pre-plans, where they walk through different buildings in Brigantine, identifying standpipe locations, fire alarms, and utility shut-offs. That way, when an actual emergency happens, they know exactly where to go.
Why This Training Matters
Firefighters don’t just respond to emergencies - they train nonstop to be ready before disaster strikes. From learning how to navigate burning buildings to ensuring every firefighter knows the layout of Brigantine’s largest structures, this work saves lives.
Watching these live burns up close gave us a whole new respect for what Brigantine’s firefighters and EMS teams do. Their commitment to training ensures that when an emergency happens, they’re prepared to act fast, stay safe, and protect our community.
